Kutná Hora, east of Prague, grew rich from silver mining in the Middle Ages and once rivaled Prague in importance. Its historic center and churches are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Churches and the ossuary
The Sedlec Ossuary is decorated with the bones of tens of thousands of people, including a chandelier and a coat of arms made entirely of bones. St Barbara's Church, dedicated to the patron saint of miners, is a gothic masterpiece.
Silver
The Italian Court was the royal mint where silver coins were made. You can visit a medieval silver mine in the Czech Museum of Silver.
A day in Kutná Hora
Kutná Hora was once one of the richest towns in Bohemia, thanks to its silver mines. Its wealth funded the magnificent St. Barbara's Church, a gothic cathedral with flying buttresses and a tent-like roof. The Italian Court was the royal mint, where silver coins called groschen were struck.
In the suburb of Sedlec, the Sedlec Ossuary is decorated with the bones of tens of thousands of people, including a chandelier that contains every bone of the human body. It is unusual and unforgettable.
Good to know
Kutná Hora is about an hour from Prague by train, making it an easy day trip. The town center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Czech Museum of Silver offers tours of a medieval mine, where you wear a miner's coat and helmet to walk through narrow tunnels.
