Hurghada, on Egypt's Red Sea coast, is a sunny resort town known for its coral reefs, diving and beaches. It grew from a small fishing village into one of the country's main holiday destinations.

The sea

Boat trips go to Giftun Island and the reefs for snorkeling and diving among colorful coral and fish. The Hurghada Marina is lined with restaurants and cafés.

The town

El Dahar, the old town, has a local market and the Grand Mosque. Desert safaris head inland to Bedouin camps. Luxor is a day trip away.

A day in Hurghada

Take a boat trip to the Giftun Islands for snorkeling over coral reefs, or go diving at one of the Red Sea's many reefs. The marina is a nice place for an evening walk.

In the old town, El Dahar, you can visit the local market and see everyday life.

Good to know

Hurghada is a resort town with many all-inclusive hotels. The sea is warm most of the year.

Desert safaris by quad bike to Bedouin camps are popular. Agree on prices before trips.

Planning your stay

Hurghada stretches for more than 40 kilometers along the coast, from the old town of El Dahar to the resort strips of Sahl Hasheesh and Makadi Bay. The New Marina is the best area for walking, with restaurants and a promenade. The Red Sea is pleasant for swimming most of the year, even in winter. Many visitors also take day trips to Luxor, about four hours away, to see the temples and tombs of ancient Thebes.
