Bandung, in the highlands of West Java, is known for its cool climate, its creative young population and its Art Deco buildings from the Dutch colonial era, which earned it the nickname 'Paris of Java'. Volcanoes, hot springs and tea plantations surround the city.
The city
Braga Street is lined with colonial-era buildings, cafés and art galleries. Gedung Sate, the provincial government building, is famous for the satay-shaped ornament on its roof. The Asia Africa Street hosted the historic Asian-African Conference of 1955, and its museum tells the story.
Around Bandung
Tangkuban Perahu, a volcano with a crater you can walk around, is north of the city. To the south, the Kawah Putih crater lake is a striking turquoise-white color, surrounded by tea plantations. Bandung is also famous for its factory outlet stores and culinary scene.
A day in Bandung
Start on Jalan Braga, a street of Art Deco buildings from the Dutch era, now full of cafés and art. Walk to Gedung Sate, the government building with its satay-shaped spire, and nearby factory outlets that made the city famous for shopping.
In the afternoon, drive up to Tangkuban Perahu, a volcanic crater, or the Kawah Putih crater lake with its milky turquoise water. The cool air of the highlands is a welcome change from Jakarta.
Good to know
Bandung sits at about 750 meters altitude, so it is noticeably cooler than the coast. The fast train from Jakarta takes under an hour.
The city is a weekend escape for Jakartans, so it gets busy on Saturdays. Try the local snacks like batagor and surabi.
