Turin, at the foot of the Alps, was the first capital of unified Italy in 1861 and the seat of the House of Savoy. Its grand Baroque squares and kilometers of arcades give it a refined, almost Parisian atmosphere, and it is famous for its historic cafés, chocolate and the Fiat car factory.
Royal Turin
Piazza Castello is the heart of the city, surrounded by the Royal Palace, Palazzo Madama and the Royal Theater. The Royal Palace, the main residence of the Savoy dynasty, has lavish rooms and the Royal Armory. Turin's royal residences are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Via Roma and Via Po are lined with arcades where you can walk for kilometers protected from rain. Via Po leads to Piazza Vittorio Veneto, one of the largest squares in Europe, which opens onto the Po River.
Museums and landmarks
The Mole Antonelliana, with its tall spire, is the symbol of Turin. Originally planned as a synagogue, it now houses the National Cinema Museum, and a glass elevator rises through the middle of the building to a panoramic terrace. The Egyptian Museum is one of the most important collections of Egyptian antiquities in the world, outside Cairo.
The Cathedral holds the Shroud of Turin, displayed only on rare occasions. Across the river, the Monte dei Cappuccini and the Basilica of Superga offer views of the city with the Alps behind.
Cafés and food
Turin invented the bicerin, a layered drink of espresso, chocolate and cream, and gianduja, the chocolate and hazelnut paste. Its grand historic cafés are part of the city's identity, and the aperitivo is a local tradition. The first Eataly store opened here, in the former Carpano vermouth factory district, in 2007.
