Fukuoka, on the northern coast of Kyushu, is often voted one of Japan's most livable cities. It is compact, close to the sea and famous for its food, especially the open-air yatai stalls that line its rivers at night and the rich pork-bone ramen of its Hakata district.

Yatai stalls and Nakasu

Fukuoka is one of the few places in Japan where street food stalls, known as yatai, are still a big part of nightlife. Each evening around a hundred small stalls set up across the city, especially along the river on Nakasu island and in Tenjin, serving ramen, yakitori and oden to a handful of guests on wooden benches.

Nakasu itself is the largest entertainment district in western Japan, glowing with neon reflected in the river. Canal City Hakata, a large shopping and entertainment complex with a canal running through it, is nearby.

Tenjin, Hakata and history

Tenjin is the main shopping district, with department stores, an underground shopping street and busy avenues, while Hakata, around the main station, is the gateway to the rest of Japan by bullet train. Kushida Shrine, the guardian shrine of Hakata, displays one of the giant floats used in the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival each July.

Ohori Park, built around a large lake, is a peaceful place for a walk, next to the ruins of Fukuoka Castle. Along the coast, Momochi Seaside Park and the 234-meter Fukuoka Tower offer views over Hakata Bay.

Day trips

Dazaifu Tenmangu, a famous shrine dedicated to scholarship, is about 40 minutes away, and the hot spring town of Beppu and the port city of Nagasaki are easy trips. Fukuoka is also close to South Korea, with ferries to Busan.
