Diani Beach, south of Mombasa, is one of Africa's most beautiful beaches, a long strip of white sand lined with palm trees and turquoise water.
The beach
The beach stretches for about 17 kilometers. Kitesurfing, diving and snorkeling are popular. Black-and-white Colobus monkeys live in the coastal forest.
Around Diani
Boat trips go to the Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park to see dolphins and coral reefs. Shimba Hills reserve is inland.
A day in Diani
Diani Beach has white sand and turquoise water lined with palm trees. Snorkel in the Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park, often with dolphins, and visit the Colobus Conservation center to see black-and-white colobus monkeys.
In the afternoon, try kitesurfing or relax on the beach.
Good to know
Diani is about an hour south of Mombasa. The Shimba Hills reserve, with elephants, is nearby.
Kitesurfing is best from December to March and June to September.
Why it is special
Diani Beach is regularly named among the best beaches in Africa, with about 17 kilometers of white sand protected by a coral reef. The Colobus Conservation center works to protect the Angolan colobus monkeys that live in the coastal forest, and it has installed rope bridges called colobridges so they can cross the main road safely. Dhow trips go to Wasini Island, where the Swahili village and coral gardens are worth a visit, and to Kisite marine park.
