The Hunza Valley, in Pakistan's far north, is surrounded by some of the highest mountains on Earth, including Rakaposhi and Ultar Sar. Its villages, orchards and forts make it one of the most beautiful places in Asia.
Karimabad
Karimabad, the main town, is overlooked by the 700-year-old Baltit Fort. The older Altit Fort stands above the river. In spring, apricot and cherry blossoms cover the valley.
The Karakoram
The Karakoram Highway, one of the highest paved roads in the world, runs through the valley. Attabad Lake, formed by a landslide in 2010, is a stunning turquoise color. The Passu Cones are jagged peaks further north.
A day in Hunza
Climb up to Baltit Fort in Karimabad, a 700-year-old fort with views over the valley and the peaks of Rakaposhi and Ultar. Visit the even older Altit Fort, above the river.
Then drive to Attabad Lake, a turquoise lake formed by a landslide in 2010, and walk across the Hussaini suspension bridge.
Good to know
Hunza is reached by the Karakoram Highway, one of the highest paved roads in the world. Spring brings cherry and apricot blossoms, and autumn turns the poplars gold.
The Khunjerab Pass, on the Chinese border, is the highest point of the highway.
