Bocas del Toro is an archipelago on Panama's Caribbean coast, with colorful wooden houses on stilts, mangroves, coral reefs and a relaxed atmosphere.
Bocas Town
Bocas Town, on Isla Colón, has a main street of colorful wooden buildings, bars over the water and water taxis to the other islands.
Islands
Starfish Beach is famous for starfish in shallow water. Boat tours visit Zapatilla Cays, dolphin bays and coral reefs. Red Frog Beach is on Isla Bastimentos.
A day in Bocas del Toro
Take a water taxi from Bocas Town to explore the islands. Starfish Beach, on Isla Colón, has shallow water full of red starfish. Boat tours visit Dolphin Bay, Cayo Zapatilla's white beaches and the coral reefs of the Bastimentos marine park.
In the evening, Bocas Town comes alive with waterfront bars and restaurants built on stilts over the water.
Good to know
Bocas del Toro is reached by short flight from Panama City or by bus and ferry from the mainland. Rain can fall at any time of year, but September and October are often the driest months here.
Surfing is good from December to March. Bastimentos Island has a laid-back Afro-Caribbean community.
