Puno sits at 3,800 meters on the shore of Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world. It is the folklore capital of Peru and the base for visiting the lake's islands.

Lake Titicaca

The Uros people live on floating islands made of totora reeds. Taquile Island is known for its textiles, knitted by the men. Boats leave from Puno's port.

The town

The Plaza de Armas has a baroque cathedral, and Jirón Lima is the main pedestrian street. The Candelaria festival in February is one of the largest in South America.

A day on Lake Titicaca

Take a boat to the Uros floating islands, made of layers of totora reeds, where families welcome visitors and show how they build their homes and boats. Continue to Taquile Island, where the men knit and the women weave, and the views over the lake are stunning.

Back in Puno, visit the cathedral and the lakeside. The Sillustani burial towers, by a nearby lake, are a short trip away.

In February, the Festival of the Virgin of Candelaria fills the streets with dancers in elaborate costumes. Homestays on Amantaní Island let you spend the night with local families.
