Abha, in the Asir Mountains of southwest Saudi Arabia, is a cool, green city at over 2,200 meters. It is known for its fog, mountain views and the colorful painted houses of the Asiri tradition.
The city
Art Street and the Al-Muftaha village celebrate Asiri art, with its colorful geometric patterns painted by women. Cable cars descend into valleys around the city.
Mountains
Al-Soudah, the highest point in Saudi Arabia, has juniper forests and views over the clouds. Rijal Almaa is a village of stone towers decorated with quartz, on an old trade route.
A day in Abha
Walk through Al Muftaha Village, an arts district, and the colorful houses of the old town. Take the cable car down to the Green Mountain or to Al Soudah, with its cool forests.
Visit the hanging village of Habala, built on a cliff.

Abha sits at about 2,200 meters, so it is cool in summer and a popular escape from the heat.
