Fethiye, on Türkiye's Turquoise Coast, is a relaxed harbor town set against pine-covered mountains. It is the gateway to some of the country's most beautiful scenery, from the Blue Lagoon at Ölüdeniz to the ancient Lycian rock tombs carved into the cliffs above town.

Fethiye town

The town was built on the site of ancient Telmessos, and the most striking reminders are the Lycian rock tombs cut into the cliff face, including the temple-like Tomb of Amyntas from the 4th century BC, beautifully lit at night. A harbor promenade lined with boats leads to the old Paspatur bazaar, a maze of shops and cafés.

The Fethiye fish market is a local favorite: you choose fresh fish from the central stalls and have it cooked at one of the surrounding restaurants. Nearby Çalış Beach is famous for its sunsets.

Ölüdeniz and the coast

About 15 kilometers away, Ölüdeniz is one of the most photographed beaches in Türkiye, with a calm, turquoise lagoon protected by a sandy spit. Above it rises Babadağ mountain, from which paragliders launch and glide down to the beach.

Daily boat trips explore the Twelve Islands of Fethiye Bay, while Butterfly Valley, a secluded beach between steep cliffs, can be reached by boat. The Lycian Way, a long-distance hiking trail, begins near Ölüdeniz.

Kayaköy and day trips

Kayaköy is a haunting abandoned village of hundreds of stone houses on a hillside, left empty after the population exchange between Greece and Türkiye in 1923. The Saklıkent Gorge, ancient Tlos and the beaches of Kaş and Kalkan are also within reach. Dalaman Airport is about an hour's drive away.
