San Carlos de Bariloche, in northern Patagonia, sits on the shore of Nahuel Huapi Lake, surrounded by mountains and forests. Its stone and wood architecture and chocolate shops give it an Alpine feel.

The town

The Centro Cívico, built of stone and wood, overlooks the lake. Mitre Street is lined with chocolate shops. Cerro Campanario, reached by chairlift, offers one of the best views in Patagonia.

Lakes and mountains

The Circuito Chico is a scenic drive around lakes and forests. In winter, Cerro Catedral is South America's largest ski resort.

A day in Bariloche

Start in the Civic Center, a square with stone and wood buildings inspired by Alpine architecture, and stop in one of the chocolate shops on Mitre Street. Then take the Circuito Chico, a 60-kilometer scenic loop along Lake Nahuel Huapi, by car or bicycle.

Ride the chairlift up Cerro Campanario for one of the most famous views in Argentina, over lakes, islands and forested peaks. In the evening, try Patagonian lamb or trout in a mountain lodge.

Good to know

Bariloche is a year-round destination: skiing at Cerro Catedral in winter, from July to September, and hiking, kayaking and boat trips in summer.

Bariloche is also the start of the Seven Lakes Route to San Martín de los Andes, one of the most beautiful drives in the country. Weather in the mountains changes fast, so pack layers.
