Sylhet, in northeast Bangladesh, is surrounded by rolling tea gardens, rivers and hills near the Indian border. It is known for its shrines, swamp forests and green landscapes.
The city
The Shrine of Hazrat Shah Jalal is an important pilgrimage site. The Keane Bridge crosses the Surma River near the clock tower.
Nature
Tea estates like Malnicherra surround the city. Ratargul is a freshwater swamp forest explored by boat, and Jaflong has clear rivers with stones from the hills.
A day in Sylhet
Visit the shrine of Hazrat Shah Jalal, a revered Sufi saint, then explore the tea gardens on the edge of the city, such as Malnicherra, one of the oldest in the country.
Take a day trip to Ratargul, a freshwater swamp forest explored by boat, or to Jaflong, where stone collectors work in the river at the foot of the Indian hills.
Good to know
Sylhet is greener and hillier than most of Bangladesh, and the monsoon fills its rivers and wetlands. Many British Bangladeshis have roots in Sylhet.
Bisnakandi and Lalakhal, with turquoise water, are popular spots.
