Cali, in southwestern Colombia, is famous as the world capital of salsa. It is a warm, energetic city of music and dance, with a colonial hillside neighborhood and a river running through its center.

The city

The San Antonio neighborhood has colonial houses, a hilltop church and views over the city. The Cali River boulevard is lined with parks and sculptures, including the famous Cat of the River. Cristo Rey stands on a hill above the city.

Salsa

Salsa clubs and dance schools are everywhere, and the World Salsa Festival and the Feria de Cali in December fill the city with music.

A day in Cali

Walk through San Antonio, a hilltop neighborhood with colonial houses and a church with a view over the city. Visit the Cat of the River, a large bronze cat statue surrounded by colorful cat sculptures.

In the evening, take a salsa class, then go dancing in a salsa club, where the city's famous dancers spin at incredible speed.

Good to know

Cali is the salsa capital of the world. The Feria de Cali, in late December, is a big salsa festival.

Try lulada and champús, local fruit drinks.

Why it is special

Cali has a large Afro-Colombian population and a warm, festive atmosphere. Its salsa style is fast and acrobatic, and dance schools are everywhere, many offering classes for beginners. The Petronio Álvarez Festival in August celebrates Pacific coast music. The Cristo Rey statue on a hill above the city offers wide views, and the Cali River promenade is pleasant for walks. Cali is also a good base for the Pance River and the Farallones de Cali National Park.
