Aalborg, in northern Jutland, is a lively city on the Limfjord with a renovated waterfront, colorful old houses and a famous nightlife street. Nearby is one of Denmark's largest Viking burial grounds.
The city
The harbor front has been transformed into a promenade with the Utzon Center, designed by the architect of the Sydney Opera House, and the Musikkens Hus concert hall. Jomfru Ane Gade is a short street packed with bars and restaurants.
History
Jens Bang's Stenhus is a richly decorated Renaissance merchant's house. Lindholm Høje, on a hill across the fjord, has hundreds of Viking graves marked with stones in the shape of ships.
A day in Aalborg
Walk through the old town, with its half-timbered merchant houses, the Jens Bang Stone House and the Budolfi Cathedral. Then follow the waterfront along the Limfjord, where the Utzon Center, designed by the architect of the Sydney Opera House, stands.
In the evening, Jomfru Ane Gade is a street full of bars and restaurants. Lindholm Høje, a Viking burial ground with stone ship settings, is just north of the city.
Good to know
Aalborg is the main city of North Jutland and a good base for exploring Skagen and the west coast beaches.
The city is known for aquavit, a caraway-flavored spirit.
