Aarhus, Denmark's second city, is a lively university town on the east coast of Jutland, with a medieval Latin Quarter, a striking modern waterfront and one of Scandinavia's best art museums.
Art and history
ARoS Aarhus Art Museum is crowned by 'Your Rainbow Panorama', a circular walkway of colored glass with views over the city. Den Gamle By is an open-air museum of old Danish houses and shops.
The city
The Latin Quarter has cobbled lanes and cafés, and the canal street Åboulevarden is lined with terraces. The harbor district has the Iceberg apartments and the Dokk1 library.
A day in Aarhus
Start at ARoS art museum and walk around its rainbow-colored glass panorama on the roof, with views over the whole city. Then visit Den Gamle By, an open-air museum where old houses from across Denmark have been rebuilt to show town life from the 1500s to the 1970s.
In the afternoon, walk along the canal-side Aboulevarden, lined with cafés, and visit the Latin Quarter, the oldest part of town. Further out, Moesgaard Museum displays the 2,000-year-old Grauballe Man, a remarkably preserved bog body.
Good to know
Aarhus is Denmark's second-largest city and a lively student town. It was European Capital of Culture in 2017.
The new harbor district, Aarhus Ø, has striking modern architecture, including the iceberg-shaped apartment buildings, and a harbor bath for swimming.
