Helsinki, Finland's capital, is a compact seaside city of neoclassical squares, Art Nouveau buildings and modern design, surrounded by islands.

The center

Senate Square is dominated by the white Helsinki Cathedral. The Market Square by the harbor sells fish and berries, and the red-brick Uspenski Cathedral overlooks it. The Esplanadi park is the city's favorite strolling place.

Islands and saunas

Ferries reach the sea fortress of Suomenlinna, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Public saunas like Löyly let you sweat and then jump into the sea. The Oodi library and the rock-carved Temppeliaukio Church show Finnish architecture.

A day in Helsinki

Start at Senate Square, dominated by the white Helsinki Cathedral, then walk to the Market Square by the harbor, where stalls sell salmon soup, berries and reindeer products. Visit the Old Market Hall next door, then take the ferry to Suomenlinna, a UNESCO-listed sea fortress spread over islands.

In the afternoon, explore the Design District, visit the Temppeliaukio Church carved into solid rock, and the modern Oodi library. End with a visit to one of the public saunas by the sea, followed by a dip in the Baltic.

Good to know

Helsinki is compact and walkable, with trams covering the center. Summer brings white nights and outdoor terraces; winter is dark, but the city is cozy and the sea sometimes freezes.

Saunas are central to Finnish life, and public saunas are a great way to meet locals.
