Tampere sits on an isthmus between two large lakes, with the Tammerkoski rapids running through its center. Once Finland's industrial heart, its red-brick factories are now museums, shops and restaurants.
Factories and rapids
The Finlayson area, a former cotton mill, has museums and cafés. The Tammerkoski rapids flow past old factory buildings. The Moomin Museum and the Vapriikki museum center are popular.
Sauna capital
Tampere calls itself the sauna capital of the world. Rajaportti is Finland's oldest public sauna still in use. Pyynikki ridge has an observation tower famous for its doughnuts.
