Delhi, India's capital, has been the seat of empires for centuries. Its old city is a maze of crowded bazaars and Mughal monuments, while New Delhi, designed by the British, has wide avenues and government buildings.
Old Delhi
The Red Fort, built by Shah Jahan, the emperor who also built the Taj Mahal, was the main residence of the Mughal emperors. Nearby, the Jama Masjid is one of India's largest mosques. Chandni Chowk, the main street, is a chaotic, fascinating bazaar of spices, fabrics and street food.
New Delhi
India Gate and the Kartavya Path lead to the President's House. Humayun's Tomb, a forerunner of the Taj Mahal, and the Qutub Minar, a 73-meter minaret, are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The Lotus Temple and Akshardham are modern landmarks.
A day in Delhi
Start in Old Delhi early, before the lanes get too crowded. Climb the minaret of the Jama Masjid, then take a cycle rickshaw through Chandni Chowk and the spice market of Khari Baoli, where the air is thick with chilli and cardamom.
In the afternoon, move to New Delhi: Humayun's Tomb, the garden tomb that inspired the Taj Mahal, is peaceful in the late light. Finish at India Gate as families gather in the evening, or at the Sufi shrine of Nizamuddin, where qawwali music is sung on Thursday evenings.
Good to know
Delhi is huge, so use the clean and efficient Delhi Metro to cross the city. October to March is the best time to visit; summer is extremely hot, and winter mornings can be foggy with poor air quality.
Dress modestly in religious sites, and agree on a price before any rickshaw ride. Eat street food where it is busy and cooked fresh in front of you.
