Exploring the park
Killarney National Park was Ireland's first national park, and it covers lakes, mountains and ancient oak woods right on the edge of town. Bikes and jaunting cars, traditional horse-drawn carriages, are the classic ways to explore it, and many paths are car-free. Muckross House, a Victorian mansion, has beautiful gardens and a traditional farm next door that shows rural life in the past.
The Gap of Dunloe, a narrow mountain pass between Purple Mountain and the MacGillycuddy's Reeks, is one of the most beautiful walks or rides in Ireland. Many visitors combine it with a boat trip back across the lakes to Ross Castle. The Reeks include Carrauntoohil, Ireland's highest mountain, which experienced hikers can climb on a clear day.
