Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia's capital, is a modern city of skyscrapers, mosques, temples and markets. Its twin Petronas Towers were the tallest buildings in the world from 1998 to 2004.
Towers and the center
The Petronas Twin Towers have a skybridge and an observation deck, with the KLCC Park at their feet. Bukit Bintang is the shopping and entertainment district. Merdeka Square, where independence was declared, is surrounded by colonial buildings.
Temples and markets
Batu Caves, just outside the city, is a Hindu shrine in limestone caves reached by 272 rainbow-colored steps. Chinatown's Petaling Street and the Central Market sell crafts and food.
A day in Kuala Lumpur
Start at the Petronas Twin Towers early, with a pre-booked ticket for the skybridge and observation deck, then walk through KLCC Park below. In the morning, take the train to the Batu Caves, where a giant golden statue guards the 272 colorful steps leading up into a limestone cave temple.
In the afternoon, explore Merdeka Square and the Moorish-style Sultan Abdul Samad Building, then Chinatown and Petaling Street. End the evening at Jalan Alor, the city's most famous food street, where hawker stalls serve satay, noodles and grilled seafood late into the night.
Good to know
The LRT, MRT and monorail connect most sights, and ride-hailing apps are cheap. Kuala Lumpur is hot and humid all year, with short, heavy afternoon showers, so plan outdoor visits for the morning.
Dress modestly when visiting mosques and temples. The city is a food paradise, with Malay, Chinese and Indian cuisines side by side.
