Bergen, surrounded by seven mountains on Norway's west coast, was an important Hanseatic trading port. Its colorful wooden wharf, Bryggen, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the city is the gateway to the fjords.
Bryggen and the harbor
Bryggen's row of wooden merchant houses, with narrow passages behind them, dates back to the Hanseatic League. The fish market by the harbor sells seafood and snacks.
Mountains and fjords
The Fløibanen funicular climbs Mount Fløyen for views over the city. Bergen is known as one of the rainiest cities in Europe, so bring a rain jacket. Fjord cruises and the 'Norway in a Nutshell' tour leave from here.
A day in Bergen
Start at Bryggen, the old Hanseatic wharf, where colorful wooden buildings lean against each other and narrow passages lead to hidden courtyards. Visit the Fish Market by the harbor, then take the Fløibanen funicular up Mount Fløyen for a view over the city, the harbor and the islands.
In the afternoon, walk through the old streets of Nordnes or hike to Mount Ulriken, the highest of the seven mountains around Bergen, reachable by cable car.
Good to know
Bergen is one of the rainiest cities in Europe, so bring a raincoat and good shoes. When the sun shines, the city is magical.
It is the gateway to the fjords: day trips go to the Sognefjord and the Hardangerfjord, and the Hurtigruten coastal ships start their voyage north here.
