Tromsø, far above the Arctic Circle, is one of the best places in the world to see the northern lights. In summer, the sun never sets, and in winter, the polar night brings weeks without sunrise.

The city

The triangular Arctic Cathedral, across the bridge, is the city's landmark. The Fjellheisen cable car climbs to a viewpoint over the island city. The Polaria aquarium and the Polar Museum tell the story of Arctic life and exploration.

Northern lights

From September to March, tours drive out of the city to find clear skies for the aurora borealis. Dog sledding, whale watching and snowshoeing are popular winter activities.

A day in Tromsø

Visit the Arctic Cathedral, with its triangular shape and huge glass mosaic, then take the Fjellheisen cable car up Mount Storsteinen for a view over the island city and the mountains. The Polaria aquarium and the Polar Museum tell stories of Arctic life and exploration.

In winter, evenings are for northern lights tours, dog sledding and reindeer sledding with Sámi guides. In summer, the midnight sun shines all night.

Good to know

Tromsø is about 350 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle. From late November to mid-January, the sun does not rise, but the blue twilight is beautiful.

The northern lights season runs from September to April, and clear, dark skies outside the city give the best chances. Dress in warm layers.
