Baguio, at about 1,500 meters in the Cordillera mountains of northern Luzon, is known as the 'Summer Capital of the Philippines' for its cool climate and pine forests. It is a university town with a lively market and an artistic community.

The city

Session Road is the main street, and Burnham Park, designed by the American planner Daniel Burnham, has a lake with rowing boats. The Baguio Cathedral, Mines View Park and The Mansion are classic stops.

Around Baguio

The La Trinidad strawberry farms are nearby. Baguio is a gateway to the Cordillera, with the rice terraces of Banaue and the hanging coffins of Sagada further north. The Panagbenga flower festival in February is the city's biggest event.

A day in Baguio

Baguio, high in the Cordillera mountains, was built by the Americans as a summer capital to escape the lowland heat. Start at Burnham Park, with its lake and rowing boats, then walk up Session Road to the Baguio Cathedral. The public market is full of strawberries, ube jam, vegetables and handwoven textiles.

In the afternoon, visit Mines View Park for views over the mountains, the pine-shaded Wright Park and the Mansion, the presidential summer residence. The BenCab Museum, just outside town, is one of the best art museums in the country.

Good to know

Baguio is cool all year, around 15 to 23°C, so bring a jacket. It is about five to six hours by bus from Manila.

The Panagbenga flower festival in February is the city's biggest event. Baguio is also the gateway to the rice terraces of Sagada, Banaue and Batad.
