Aveiro, on Portugal's central coast, is built around a network of canals connected to a large lagoon, which has earned it the nickname 'the Venice of Portugal'. Colorful boats, Art Nouveau facades and nearby beaches lined with striped houses make it a cheerful and photogenic stop.
The canals and moliceiros
The central canal runs through the heart of the city, crossed by bridges decorated with colorful ribbons. Brightly painted moliceiro boats, once used to harvest seaweed from the lagoon, now carry visitors on tours. Their bows are decorated with humorous, sometimes cheeky, hand-painted scenes.
Along the canals stand elegant Art Nouveau buildings, and the city has a small museum dedicated to the style. The old fish market and the lively square around it are popular in the evenings.
Costa Nova and the salt pans
A short drive or bus ride away, Costa Nova is a seaside village famous for its palheiros, wooden houses painted with bright vertical stripes, set between the lagoon and the Atlantic beach. Nearby, the Barra lighthouse is one of the tallest in Portugal.
Around the city, traditional salt pans still produce sea salt, and you can visit them to learn about this centuries-old industry.
Visiting tips
Aveiro is about an hour from Porto and 40 minutes from Coimbra by train. The railway station itself is decorated with beautiful blue and white azulejo tiles. Don't leave without trying ovos moles, the city's famous sweet.
