Lagos, in the western Algarve, combines a lively historic town with some of the most spectacular coastline in Europe. Golden sandstone cliffs, sea arches and grottoes surround small beaches with turquoise water, making it one of Portugal's favorite summer destinations.
Ponta da Piedade and the beaches
Ponta da Piedade is a headland of towering rock pillars, arches and sea caves, glowing gold at sunset. A wooden staircase descends toward the water, and boat or kayak trips explore the grottoes from the sea.
Nearby, Praia Dona Ana and Praia do Camilo, reached by a long wooden stairway, are small coves framed by dramatic rock formations. Meia Praia, east of town, is a long sandy beach for walking and water sports.
The old town
Lagos played an important role in the Age of Discovery, when Henry the Navigator launched expeditions from here. Its walled old town has cobbled streets, whitewashed houses, lively squares and the gilded Church of Santo António. A small museum on the site of Europe's first slave market, established in 1444, confronts this dark chapter of history.
In the evenings, the streets fill with restaurants and bars, and the marina is a pleasant place for a stroll.
Visiting tips
Lagos is about an hour from Faro airport. The famous Benagil sea cave is further east along the coast, and Sagres and Cabo de São Vicente, the southwestern tip of Europe, are a short drive west. Summer is busy; spring and autumn are perfect for coastal walks.
