Incheon, on the coast west of Seoul, is where most visitors first arrive in Korea through its world-class airport. Beyond the terminals, it is a city of contrasts: the historic port where Korea opened to the world in 1883, and Songdo, a gleaming new city built on reclaimed land.
Chinatown and the old port
Incheon Chinatown, the largest in Korea, grew around the port in the late 19th century. Its red gates and lanterns lead to restaurants serving jajangmyeon, noodles in black bean sauce, a dish that was born here and is now one of Korea's favorite comfort foods. The Jajangmyeon Museum tells its story.
Next door, the Songwol-dong Fairy Tale Village is a playful neighborhood of murals and sculptures, and the Open Port area preserves early modern buildings from the days of foreign trade.
Songdo and Wolmido
Songdo International City is a planned 'smart city' of glass towers, canals and green spaces. Songdo Central Park has a seawater canal where you can rent boats, and its evening views of the skyline are beautiful, as the night walk shows.
Wolmido, a small island connected to the mainland, has a seaside promenade, an amusement park and seafood restaurants, and is a popular spot to watch the sunset over the Yellow Sea.
Visiting tips
Incheon International Airport is regularly ranked among the best airports in the world, with gardens, cultural performances and even a skating rink. The city is connected to Seoul by subway and the airport railroad, and islands such as Ganghwado offer a quiet escape.
