Jeonju is where Korea goes to taste tradition. The city is home to one of the largest collections of traditional hanok houses in the country and is famous as the birthplace of bibimbap. UNESCO named it a City of Gastronomy.

Jeonju Hanok Village

The Jeonju Hanok Village contains around 700 traditional houses with curved tiled roofs, many of them now guesthouses, tea houses and craft workshops. Visitors often rent hanbok to stroll the lanes, which makes the village especially photogenic.

Inside the village, Gyeonggijeon Shrine holds a portrait of King Taejo, the founder of the Joseon Dynasty, whose family came from Jeonju. Across the road, Jeondong Cathedral, built in the early 20th century, is one of the most beautiful churches in Korea.

Viewpoints and murals

Climb up to Omokdae pavilion for a view over the sea of hanok rooftops. Across the road, Jaman Mural Village is a hillside neighborhood whose walls are covered in colorful paintings and cartoons, with small cafés along the way.

The Jeonju Nambu Market, beside the village, hosts a popular night market on weekends, and its upper floor has a youth market of small shops and restaurants.

Visiting tips

Jeonju is around 1 hour 40 minutes from Seoul by KTX train. Spend a night in a hanok guesthouse to experience sleeping on a heated ondol floor. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons.
