Gothenburg, Sweden's second city, is a friendly port on the west coast, with Dutch-style canals, green parks and a famous seafood scene. Its southern archipelago is a short tram and ferry ride away.
The city
Kungsportsavenyn, 'the Avenue', is the main boulevard. Haga, an old neighborhood of wooden houses, is famous for cafés and giant cinnamon buns. Liseberg is one of Scandinavia's largest amusement parks.
The sea
The Feskekôrka, a fish market hall shaped like a church, sells fresh seafood. Ferries reach the car-free islands of the southern archipelago, with rocky coves and fishing villages.
A day in Gothenburg
Walk along the canals and the tree-lined Kungsportsavenyn boulevard to Götaplatsen and the Poseidon statue. Visit the Haga district, with its wooden houses and cafés, famous for huge cinnamon buns.
In the afternoon, take a tram and ferry to the southern archipelago, a car-free group of islands with rocky shores and fishing villages.

The city is known for seafood: visit the Feskekôrka, a fish market hall shaped like a church.
Why people love it
Gothenburg is known in Sweden for its friendly locals and their love of puns. It was founded in the 17th century and designed by Dutch engineers, which is why it has canals. The Universeum science center and the Röhsska design museum are good rainy-day choices, and Slottsskogen is a large park with free animals. In summer, the city has many festivals and a relaxed outdoor café culture.
