Hua Hin, on the Gulf of Thailand about three hours south of Bangkok, became Thailand's first beach resort in the 1920s when the royal family built a summer palace here. It remains a relaxed, elegant seaside town, popular with Thai families and long-stay visitors.

The beach and the town

Hua Hin Beach stretches for several kilometers south of the town, with fishing piers, horse rides and seafood restaurants. At its southern end, Khao Takiab, or Monkey Mountain, has a temple, a standing Buddha facing the sea and views along the coast.

Hua Hin Railway Station, built in the early 20th century, is one of the most beautiful in Thailand, with a red and white wooden royal waiting pavilion.

Markets

The Hua Hin Night Market, in the town center, fills a street with seafood stalls, snacks and souvenirs every evening, as the night walks show. On weekend evenings, Cicada Market is a stylish art and craft market with live performances and food in a garden setting.

Palaces and nature

Maruekhathaiyawan Palace is a graceful seaside summer palace made of golden teak, built on stilts and connected by long open corridors. South of town, Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park is home to Phraya Nakhon Cave, where a royal pavilion is lit by sunlight streaming through a hole in the cave roof. Hua Hin is drier than many Thai resorts, with pleasant weather much of the year.
