Fajardo, on Puerto Rico's east coast, is the gateway to the islands of Culebra and Vieques and home to Laguna Grande, a bioluminescent lagoon that glows at night.
Bioluminescent bay
Kayak tours through mangroves lead to Laguna Grande, where tiny organisms make the water glow when disturbed. Cabezas de San Juan nature reserve has a historic lighthouse.
Islands and rainforest
Ferries go to Culebra, with Flamenco Beach, and to Vieques. El Yunque National Forest is close by.
A day in Fajardo
Take a catamaran trip to the small islands off the coast, like Icacos, for snorkeling in clear water. At night, kayak through a mangrove channel into Laguna Grande, a bioluminescent lagoon that glows when the water is disturbed.
The Cabezas de San Juan nature reserve has a lighthouse and mangroves.
Good to know
Fajardo is the main ferry port for Vieques and Culebra. Bioluminescence is best on dark nights, away from the full moon.
