Ponce, on Puerto Rico's southern coast, is the island's second city and known as the 'Pearl of the South'. Its historic center has elegant neoclassical buildings and colorful plazas.

Plaza Las Delicias

The main square has the red-and-black striped Parque de Bombas, a historic firehouse, and the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Lion fountains decorate the streets.

Culture

The Museo de Arte de Ponce holds one of the best art collections in the Caribbean. Castillo Serrallés, a hilltop mansion, belonged to a rum family. La Guancha is a seaside boardwalk.

A day in Ponce

Ponce is Puerto Rico's second city, called 'La Perla del Sur', the Pearl of the South. Start at Plaza Las Delicias, with the cathedral and the famous Parque de Bombas, a red and black striped old fire station. Walk through the streets of colorful Creole and neoclassical houses.

Visit the Museo de Arte de Ponce, one of the best art museums in the Caribbean, then climb to Castillo Serrallés, a hilltop mansion of a rum family with views over the city.

Good to know

Ponce is about 90 minutes from San Juan by car. The Carnival in February features vejigantes, dancers with colorful spiked masks.

La Guancha boardwalk is popular in the evening.
