Kaliningrad, a Russian enclave between Poland and Lithuania, was the German city of Königsberg until 1945. It mixes Prussian heritage, Soviet architecture and the Baltic coast.

Kant Island

Königsberg Cathedral stands on Kant Island in the Pregolya River, with the tomb of the philosopher Immanuel Kant. The Fishing Village nearby is a waterfront of rebuilt German-style houses.

Amber and the coast

The region produces most of the world's amber, and the Amber Museum is in an old fortress tower. The Curonian Spit, a UNESCO-listed sand dune peninsula, and the seaside town of Zelenogradsk are nearby.

A day in Kaliningrad

Kaliningrad was once the German city of Königsberg. Start on Kant Island, where the restored cathedral holds the tomb of the philosopher Immanuel Kant. Then walk along the river to the Fishing Village, a modern quarter built in old German style.

Visit the Museum of the World Ocean, with real ships moored on the river, and the Amber Museum in an old fortress tower.

Good to know

Kaliningrad is separated from the rest of Russia, between Poland and Lithuania. The Curonian Spit, a UNESCO-listed sand peninsula with huge dunes, is a day trip away.

The Baltic coast resorts of Zelenogradsk and Svetlogorsk are popular in summer.

Why it is unique

Because of its German past, Kaliningrad looks unlike any other Russian city. Red-brick city gates, fortifications and old villas survive among Soviet buildings, and the region produces most of the world's amber. Rauschen, now Svetlogorsk, is an old spa town with wooden villas on a cliff above the Baltic. On the Curonian Spit, the Dancing Forest has pine trees twisted into strange shapes, and the high Efa Dune offers views over the sea and the lagoon.
