Suzdal, northeast of Moscow, is one of the best-preserved towns of the Golden Ring, a route of ancient Russian cities. Its white-stone churches, monasteries and wooden houses among meadows look almost unchanged for centuries.

Churches and monasteries

The Suzdal Kremlin has the Cathedral of the Nativity with blue domes covered in golden stars. The Monastery of St Euthymius has red walls and bell concerts. The white-stone monuments are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Wooden Russia

The Museum of Wooden Architecture displays wooden churches and peasant houses. The Kamenka River winds through meadows, perfect for a quiet walk.

A day in Suzdal

Suzdal is a small town with dozens of churches and monasteries. Start at the Kremlin with its blue-domed cathedral, then visit the Museum of Wooden Architecture.

Walk along the Kamenka River through meadows to the Spaso-Evfimiev Monastery, where bells ring at certain hours.

Good to know

Suzdal is part of the Golden Ring of historic towns. Try the local mead, medovukha.

It is quiet in the evening, so staying overnight is rewarding.

Why it feels like a fairy tale

Suzdal escaped industrial development in the 20th century, so it has kept the look of an old Russian town, with white churches, onion domes and wooden houses with carved window frames surrounded by meadows and gardens. In winter, under deep snow, it looks like a scene from a storybook, and in summer the river banks are perfect for walks. Horse-drawn sleighs and carriages take visitors around in season, and the town has many small guesthouses in traditional houses.
