Vladivostok, on the Pacific coast near China and North Korea, is the end of the Trans-Siberian Railway, more than 9,000 kilometers from Moscow. Its hills, bays and huge bridges remind some visitors of San Francisco.

The city

The Golden Bridge crosses the Golden Horn Bay, and the Russky Bridge, one of the longest cable-stayed bridges in the world, leads to Russky Island. The funicular climbs to the Eagle's Nest viewpoint.

Waterfront

The Sports Embankment is the favorite place for evening walks. The Arbat pedestrian street, the railway station and the submarine museum S-56 are in the center.

A day in Vladivostok

Walk through the center to the Golden Horn Bay, where navy ships are moored. Take the funicular up to the Eagle's Nest viewpoint for the best view of the Golden Bridge.

Visit the submarine museum on the waterfront, then cross the Russky Bridge to Russky Island.

Good to know

Vladivostok is the end of the Trans-Siberian Railway, about 9,300 km from Moscow. It is famous for seafood, especially crab and sea urchin.

Autumn, September and October, has the best weather.

Why it feels different

Vladivostok is closer to Seoul and Tokyo than to Moscow, and its hilly streets and bay views have been compared to San Francisco. Its two big cable-stayed bridges, built for an international summit in 2012, have become symbols of the city. The Sports Harbor embankment is lively in the evenings, and in winter you can see fishermen sitting on the frozen bay ice. The seafood markets are a highlight, with crab, scallops and sea urchins sold fresh.
