Debrecen, in eastern Hungary, is the country's second-largest city and a historic center of Protestant culture, often called the 'Calvinist Rome'. It is the gateway to the Hortobágy National Park.
The center
The Great Reformed Church, a large yellow neoclassical church, dominates the main square. The Déri Museum has paintings by Mihály Munkácsy, and the Nagyerdő forest park has thermal baths and a lake.
Around Debrecen
The Hortobágy, Hungary's great plain, is a UNESCO site with herdsmen, grey cattle and a famous nine-arched bridge. The Flower Carnival in August is the city's biggest event.

Why it is worth a visit
Debrecen is known as the 'Calvinist Rome' because of its role in the Hungarian Protestant Reformation, and the yellow Great Reformed Church is its symbol. In 1849, Hungary's declaration of independence from the Habsburgs was read inside. The city has a relaxed atmosphere and a large university.
The Hortobágy National Park, about 40 kilometers away, is a vast grassland of grey cattle, racka sheep with spiral horns, and horsemen who perform traditional riding shows. The Nine-Arch Bridge is its landmark.
