Why it is worth the trip
Szentendre was settled by Serbian refugees in the 17th and 18th centuries, which explains its many Orthodox churches with onion-like spires and its Balkan-style houses. In the 20th century it became an artists' colony, and today it has dozens of galleries and small museums. The town is pretty and lively, especially on weekends.
A walk up to the Catholic church on Templom Square gives a view over the rooftops to the Danube. Combine your visit with a boat ride back to Budapest in summer for a relaxing end to the day.
