Pécs, near the Croatian border, is one of Hungary's most beautiful cities, with a mild Mediterranean feel. Its early Christian tombs are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its Ottoman mosque is now a church.
The old town
Széchenyi Square is dominated by the Mosque Church of Pasha Qasim, an Ottoman mosque converted into a Catholic church. The four-towered Pécs Cathedral stands nearby, above the Early Christian Necropolis with painted burial chambers.
Zsolnay
Pécs is the home of Zsolnay porcelain and ceramics, and the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter, in the former factory, has museums and galleries.
A day in Pécs
Start in Széchenyi Square, where a mosque from the Ottoman period is now a church. Visit the early Christian tombs, a UNESCO site, and the cathedral.
Then visit the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter, with its colorful ceramics.
Good to know
Pécs has a Mediterranean feel and a mild climate. It was a European Capital of Culture in 2010.
The Mecsek hills above the city are good for walks.
Why it is special
Pécs was founded by the Romans as Sopianae, and its early Christian burial chambers with painted walls are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city was ruled by the Ottomans for 150 years, and the Mosque of Pasha Qasim on the main square and the Mosque of Yakovali Hassan are among the best Ottoman monuments in Hungary.
The Zsolnay porcelain factory created the colorful glazed tiles found on many buildings across Hungary, and its old factory now houses a cultural quarter with museums and workshops.
