Eger, in northern Hungary, is a charming baroque town famous for its castle, which resisted an Ottoman siege in 1552, and for its red wine, Bull's Blood.
The town
Eger Castle overlooks the town, and its museum tells the story of the famous siege. A slender Ottoman minaret, the northernmost in Europe, can be climbed. Dobó Square is the town's lively center.
Wine
The Valley of Beautiful Women is a small valley full of wine cellars dug into the hillside, where you can taste Egri Bikavér, Bull's Blood. Thermal baths are also nearby.
A day in Eger
Climb up to Eger Castle, famous for its heroic defense against the Ottomans in 1552, then walk down to the town's baroque center, with the Lyceum and its astronomical tower. The minaret, the northernmost Ottoman minaret in Europe, can be climbed.
In the evening, head to the Valley of the Beautiful Women, a horseshoe of wine cellars carved into the hillside, where you can taste Bull's Blood red wine.
Good to know
Eger is about two hours from Budapest. The town has thermal baths, including a modern one with Turkish-style pools.
The cellars are especially lively on summer evenings.
