Akko, also known as Acre, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Its walled old city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has Crusader halls beneath Ottoman streets, a bustling market and a fishing harbor.
The old city
The Hospitaller Fortress, with its vast Gothic halls, was built by the Crusader Knights. A Templar tunnel runs under the city to the sea. The Al-Jazzar Mosque, with its green dome, is one of the largest mosques in Israel.
Market and harbor
The covered market sells spices, fish and sweets, and the old Khan al-Umdan caravanserai has a clock tower. Walking along the sea walls at sunset is a highlight.
A day in Akko
Akko's old city is a UNESCO site of Crusader halls and Ottoman buildings. Explore the Knights' Halls, vast vaulted rooms built by the Hospitaller knights, and walk through the Templars' Tunnel, which led to the port. The Al-Jazzar Mosque, with its green dome, is one of the largest in Israel.
In the afternoon, wander the souq for spices and fresh fish, then walk along the sea walls and watch local boys jump into the harbor.
