Haifa, Israel's third-largest city, climbs the slopes of Mount Carmel above a wide bay. It is known for the terraced Bahá'í Gardens and for its mixed Jewish and Arab population living side by side.

The Bahá'í Gardens

The Bahá'í Gardens cascade down Mount Carmel in 19 terraces around the golden-domed Shrine of the Báb, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At the bottom, the German Colony, founded by German Templers in the 19th century, has stone houses and restaurants.

The city

Wadi Nisnas is an Arab neighborhood with a lively market and street art. A cable car connects the beach with the Stella Maris monastery. Akko is a short drive north.
